Kakhovka dam on the Dnipro is destroyed, releasing its reservoir; Kyiv and Moscow blame each other

Confirmedon two or more distinct origins, at least one tied to no party: 2 distinct origins, 2 tied to no party, with visual or sensor evidence.

The Kakhovka dam and hydroelectric plant, held by Russian forces since 2022, collapsed early on 6 June, sending the reservoir down the lower Dnipro. Zelenskyy blamed Russian terrorists and Ukraine's general staff said Russian troops had placed explosives in the turbine room; Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called it deliberate sabotage by Kyiv and the Russian-installed mayor of Nova Kakhovka blamed Ukrainian shelling. The Norwegian monitor NORSAR recorded seismic signals at 2:35 and 2:54 local time and said the larger one indicated an explosion of roughly magnitude 1 to 2, NBC reported; Ukraine's prosecutor general opened a war crime and ecocide case. The IAEA said there was no immediate nuclear safety risk to the Zaporizhzhia plant, which drew cooling water from the reservoir.
