Russia holds its presidential election in occupied areas of Ukraine despite UN objections

Confirmedon an admission by the acting party plus an independent origin: 1 distinct origin, 1 tied to no party.

Russia held its 15 to 17 March presidential election, which returned Vladimir Putin for a fifth term, including in the parts of Ukraine it occupies. On 15 March UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo told the Security Council that holding the vote in those areas was unacceptable and that annexation by force violates the UN Charter, and the Secretary-General's spokesperson said Guterres denounced the effort. Ukraine, 56 other countries and the EU said the vote had no validity in the occupied areas.
