US President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that Israel and Lebanon would begin a 10-day ceasefire at 5pm US Eastern time (21:00 GMT) on 16 April, after calls with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Joseph Aoun. The US State Department said Israel kept the right to strike in self-defence at any time and that the truce could be extended by mutual consent, Al Jazeera reported. Netanyahu said Israeli forces would stay in an extensive security zone in southern Lebanon; a Hezbollah lawmaker told AFP the group would respect the truce if Israeli attacks fully stopped. It followed direct Israeli and Lebanese envoy talks hosted by the US State Department on 14 April.
