16 April 2026 in brief

In the last hours before a truce, an Israeli strike on Ghaziyeh in southern Lebanon killed at least eight people and wounded 33, Lebanon's National News Agency said, and a strike destroyed the Qasmieh bridge near Tyre, which Human Rights Watch said should be investigated as a potential war crime. [1][2] Rocket fire from Lebanon wounded three people in Karmiel and Nahariya, Magen David Adom said, and Israel's health ministry put the number admitted to hospital with war injuries at 7,791. [1][2] Trump announced a 10-day Israel-Lebanon ceasefire starting that evening, and Netanyahu said Israeli forces would stay in a security zone in southern Lebanon. [1] IEA chief Fatih Birol told AP that Europe had maybe six weeks of jet fuel left if Hormuz stayed blocked. [1] The US House rejected a war powers resolution on Iran by 213 to 214, and Pakistan's army chief met parliament speaker Ghalibaf in Tehran to push for a second round of US-Iran talks. [1][2]
