Kherson governor Oleksandr Prokudin estimated on 8 June that about 600 square km of the region was under water, 68 per cent of it on the Russian-held left bank. Ukraine's emergency service said about 2,000 people had been evacuated, while Russian-installed officials said 1,274 had left and up to 40,000 remained in flooded areas; OCHA said emergency aid was under way for more than 16,000 people. Zelenskyy said bodies were floating in flooded areas and accused Russian forces of firing on rescuers; first death reports were three from a Ukrainian official and five from the Russian-installed Nova Kakhovka mayor. Ukraine's interior minister later put the toll in Ukrainian-held areas at 31.
