Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on 5 September that President Putin ordered Russian forces to stop striking Kyiv for three days, tying the pause to a visit by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who landed in Moscow that day and were due in Kyiv on 6 September, the Kyiv Independent reported. After a call with the US side, Zelensky said Ukraine would halt strikes on Moscow through 7 September. Ukraine had proposed a broader pause from 5 to 8 September, and Zelensky said Russia attacked Kyiv's and Boryspil's airports on 5 September. The Kyiv Independent reported that at least 53 people had been killed in Kyiv and its oblast since 27 August.
