Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said on 3 March his forces had nearly surrounded Bakhmut and urged Zelenskyy to withdraw. Zelenskyy's office said on 6 March that the chief of the general staff and the ground forces commander both backed further strengthening positions in Bakhmut and continuing the defence. Prigozhin meanwhile complained publicly that the defence ministry was withholding ammunition and had cut his representative's access to headquarters. Police and volunteers evacuated civilians from Chasiv Yar and other nearby towns under artillery fire.
