22 April 2026 in brief

Al-Akhbar correspondent Amal Khalil was killed when an Israeli strike hit a house in al-Tiri in southern Lebanon, and the health ministry said two strikes there killed two people, while the Israeli military said it struck militants, denied targeting journalists and said the case was under review. [1] UKMTO said an IRGC gunboat fired on a container ship north-east of Oman, heavily damaging its bridge with all crew safe, and the IRGC Navy said it seized the MSC Francesca and the Epaminondas, the first Iranian ship seizures of the war. [1] White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the seizures did not violate the ceasefire because the ships were not US or Israeli, and parliament speaker Ghalibaf said reopening Hormuz was impossible given the US blockade. Iranian forces said they destroyed a Jaish al-Adl cell in Sistan and Baluchestan, and the Wall Street Journal reported the US halted a shipment of nearly 500 million dollars to Iraq to press Baghdad over Iran-aligned groups. [1][2] The US Senate rejected a fifth war powers resolution on Iran by 46 to 51. [1]
