18 August 2026 in brief

The shipowners' association INTERCARGO said the chief engineer of the Liberia-flagged bulk carrier Minoan Dignity died when a projectile hit the ship as it left the Strait of Hormuz; no party has been named as the attacker. [1] The UAE defence ministry said it detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran and aimed at maritime traffic, but Iran denied firing at the UAE and spoke of a false flag operation. [1] The Houthis' Saba agency said the group targeted Aramco's Jazan refinery with drones, and no Saudi confirmation was reported. [1] The UAE then suspended all trade, exchanges and financial transactions with Iran until further notice, and Iraq's government said its cabinet had approved three-month contracts from 1 September to export crude through multiple outlets. [1][2] Iran's parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the strait would stay closed until the US lifted the naval blockade and sanctions and released frozen Iranian assets, and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said France would expel two Iranian diplomats.
