24 August 2026 in brief

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the UN would register and verify ships carrying fertilizer through the Strait of Hormuz, a mechanism he said works only if all countries involved in the conflict agree. [1] The Saudi-flagged supertanker Amzan was hit by a projectile west of Yanbu and caught fire with all crew safe, and Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree claimed the attack, while UKMTO said a second tanker was disabled by a projectile off Ash Shishah, Oman, with no attacker named. [1][2] Kpler data showed only two commodity ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz, and Iran's Persian Gulf Strait Authority said it had blacklisted tankers that broke its transit rules, warning they could face seizure. [1][2] The US Treasury launched what it called a sustained campaign to cut Iran off from the global economy, sanctioning nearly 60 entities, individuals and vessels, and AP reported that the rial fell to a record 2.02 million to the dollar on the informal market. [1] Pakistan's military said army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir held talks in Tehran on preventing escalation and reopening the strait. [1]
